The Power of the Dream recognized the need for employment opportunities in the Triangle area for individuals with Autism and/or IDD and took action.
HANDmeUPs Thrift was created solely for the purpose of providing volunteer and employment opportunities to individuals with Autism and other intellectual developmental disabilities while meeting the community’s needs. The store was opened on August 27, 2013. Our store directors, Gena Brown and Jeff Fleming, are specialists who have a combined 30+ years experience working with people with disabilities in education, employment training, and job coaching. Gena and Jeff understand the varying abilities of individuals with Autism/IDD and provide a work environment where they can master specific tasks and be successful employees.
HANDmeUPs Thrift now has 22 part-time employees covering a wide range of abilities. They are paid at above minimum wage and work a variety of jobs including production associates, cashiers and back room attendants. Several volunteers from the community and an assistant manager also support the store and its employees.
HANDmeUPs features clothing for women, men, teens, children and infants, toys, housewares, furniture, books, sporting equipment and so much more! In a recent survey 97% of our customers stated they would recommend HANDmeUPs Thrift to their friends.
