ADVOCATING ON MANY LEVELS
Improves The Quality of Life for Adults with Autism/IDD
ASSET DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES
The Power of the Dream, Inc. advocates for asset development strategies for adults with autism/IDD at every level (federal, state, local), as we believe it is critical to sustainable long-term financial security and quality of life.
Successful asset-building strategies encompass employment and increased access to financial services. Examples include short-term and emergency savings programs, long-term savings and investment strategies, credit management and efforts to preserve assets. Current public policies and beliefs create disincentives for work and limit the amount of personal resources for an individual receiving SSI to $2,000 and for a couple to $3000. As a result people often become stuck in belief systems that increase dependency on public assistance.
HOUSING, SOCIALIZATION, TECHNOLOGY and EDUCATION
We also advocate for appropriate supportive housing, increased participation in recreation and community life, use of technology solutions, and post-secondary education options that accommodate the various learning styles and special needs.
